We are looking for an enthusiastic, motivated person to join our excellent team in supporting the provision of Early Learning and Childcare for children aged 2-5 years.



Applicants should be registered or eligible to register as a practitioner with the Scottish Social Services Council, the professional register for early education and childcare workers. Experience is not necessary; consideration will be given to applicants who have experience of working with young children in an Early Learning and Childcare Setting and to those who lack experience but who show commitment to gaining a relevant qualification and becoming registered.

This post is regulated work with children and is subject to the provisions of the Protection of Vulnerable Groups (Scotland) Act 2007. Successful applicants must be or agree to become members of the Protecting Vulnerable Groups Scheme. This post is subject to checks by Disclosure Scotland and all applicants will be asked to disclose information about any offences committed and/or convictions held or other circumstances that could prevent them from taking up a position in childcare.

Job Description



Maud Playgroup wants to recruit a highly motivated, enthusiastic and caring person to work with the current team in delivering a quality pre-school experience for children and families who attend our Early Learning and Childcare Setting. A childcare qualification and/or previous experience of working with young children and families are desirable but not essential. Maud Playgroup and Rising 5s meets five times a week at the Maud Village Hall from 9.10am - 12.20pm each day and our Rising 3s meet twice a week at Maud Village Hall from 1.15pm – 2.45pm every Wednesday and Friday. The number of children attending each session varies however the average is currently around 15 per morning and 9 per afternoon. Maud Playgroup is managed by an elected committee. It is registered with the Care Inspectorate under the Regulation of Care (Scotland) Act 2001 and is a member of the Early Years Scotland. The setting adheres to Early Years Scotland’s policies and codes of practice. The committee employs two other Early Years Practitioners and a Playgroup Manager.



Maud Playgroup works with the National Care Standards:

Early Education and Childcare up to the Age of 16, to ensure the quality of provision and to meet registration and inspection requirements. It uses Scottish Government national guidelines to plan and provide for children’s care, learning and development. The SSSC Codes of Practice for Employer and Social Services Workers underpin our approach.



The successful applicant will work flexibly as part of the team to support the planning and implementation of an appropriate early years curriculum and will contribute to providing for the care, safety and well-being of the children in the group. He/she will be expected to be trustworthy. He/she will be expected to treat children with respect, and should be able to encourage and support children in the play session, and sensitively cater for their individual needs. He/she will provide information to the manager to assist in the planning and organisation of activities and resources and to help in the assessment of the children's learning and development, both on a group and individual basis. He/she will help set up and clear away activities both inside and outside on a daily basis which will involve some lifting and handling of play equipment. He/she will be involved in the daily preparation of snack and supervising the child snack helper.



The successful applicant will be expected to communicate with parents positively and respectfully. A knowledge and understanding of the needs of children and their families and of cultural and religious diversity is particularly important.



The successful applicant will work during term time only. The days and sessions worked will be confirmed with the Playgroup Manager based upon the number of children. The rate of pay will be confirmed based upon the successful applicant’s professional qualifications, age and experience.



The successful applicant must be either already a member of the Protecting Vulnerable Groups Scheme or prepared to apply to this. PVG membership will disclose if someone is disqualified from working with children. The organisation can apply for a Record or an Update. Potential applicants for the post should be aware that it is an offence to apply for this position if they are on the Disqualified from Working with Children List.



Staff members are accountable to the management committee through the manager who will supervise the successful applicant.



All staff in childcare positions are required to be registered with the Scottish Social Services Council and to adhere to the Code of Practice for Social Services Workers. The successful applicant will be registered with the SSSC under the support worker category and hold a relevant qualification or will commit to working towards achieving an appropriate qualification within an agreed timescale. In the latter case, the Early Learning and Childcare Setting will provide support.
